Biography

Born November 12, 1964 in Jacksonville, Florida. Died in Athens, Georgia on December 25th, 2009. Vic Chesnutt was a singer-songwriter living in Athens, Georgia. A car crash at age 18 left him partly paralyzed, and he performed in a wheelchair. A regular of the 40 Watt Club scene, he was spotted by [a=Michael Stipe] who produced his first two albums. In 1996, Chesnutt was exposed to a wider audience with the release of the tribute album [m120021], the proceeds from which went to the Sweet Relief Fund. The album consisted of Chesnutt covers by famous musicians including [a=Garbage], [a=Smashing Pumpkins], [a=Madonna], [a=R.E.M.] and [a=Live]. A prolific songwriter, Chesnutt worked with [a=Lambchop], [a=Widespread Panic] (as [a=Brute (2)]), [a=Elf Power] as well as [a=Bill Frisell], [a=Guy Picciotto] and members of [a43637]. On December 25, 2009, Chesnutt died from an overdose of muscle relaxants that had left him in a coma in an Athens hospital.

LYRICS

Betty Lonely
lives in a duplex of stucco
on the north bank of a brackish river
her ears omit the noise from a nearby airstrip
her mind floats beyond the snapper boats
Betty Lonely
her eyes are roughly staring
at a point through her sliding glass door
her heart lives over a drawbridge
her brain is wet like a thrownet

Betty Lonely
she will always think in Spanish
though I know
her spanish black hair will start to fade
she sunk her past
out in the surrounding salt flats
her maidenhood was lost
beneath the Spanish moss

Betty Lonely
just talks to her grandbaby
everybody else she blots them out
but her words stick
like a flounder gig
her dry laugh is like a gaff
