TJ Monterde (real name: Tyrone James Monterde, born December 30, 1989, in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines) is a Filipino acoustic pop singer-songwriter, voice-over artist, and former television and radio presenter. Best known for his heartfelt ballads and stripped-down acoustic sound, he rose to prominence in the early 2010s following the viral success of his song “Ikaw At Ako.” Monterde began his career in media rather than music. At the age of 16, he joined his father’s local radio show as a guest and eventually became a radio DJ in their hometown. By 18, he transitioned into regional television, becoming one of the hosts of ABS-CBN Northern Mindanao's lifestyle and variety program “MagTV Na”, where he gained local visibility across the region. A graduate of Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan with a degree in Development Communication, Monterde spent his early twenties immersed in broadcasting and live hosting, establishing a strong multimedia background before entering the music industry full-time. In 2011, motivated by a deep passion for songwriting and encouraged by early YouTube fan support, Monterde moved to Manila to pursue a music career. He began independently uploading acoustic demos and original songs online, most notably “Ikaw At Ako,” which was later featured in a viral short film. The unexpected attention and millions of views it garnered became a turning point in his career. During this period, Monterde struggled with the harsh realities of the music industry—balancing small gigs, voice-over projects, and event hosting—while navigating countless rejections from record producers. His perseverance paid off in late 2012 when he was signed to Galaxy Records, an imprint of PolyEast Records. In 2013, he released his self-titled debut album Ikaw At Ako, which included original compositions such as "Tulad Mo," "Dating Tayo," and the titular hit. The album was praised for its emotional sincerity, raw acoustic instrumentation, and strong lyrical themes centered around love, longing, and introspection. Monterde's writing style—often compared to fellow OPM balladeers—melds gentle melodies with heartfelt storytelling, earning him a loyal following in the Original Pilipino Music (OPM) scene.
