Biography

Lo-fi bluesy garage indie rock duo from Detroit, Michigan, USA. Formed in 1997, stopped performing in February 2011. Members: [a278763] (vocals, guitar, and keyboards); [a367269] (drums and percussion). The two were a married couple at one point, but divorced in March 2000. Jack White, previously a guitarist in the garage band [a=The Go], was heavily influenced by folk blues, country, heavy 60s British blues and psychedelic rock, and Broadway show tunes. As a duo, The White Stripes dressed in minimalist red-and-white outfits. The group's debut was the 1997 single "Let's Shake Hands", followed by "Lafayette Blues" ([l105510]). They then moved to the label [l13828] and began to receive acclaim for their act and eponymous debut album, mixing cover versions ([a=Robert Johnson]'s "Stop Breaking Down Blues" and [a=Josh White]'s "St. James Infirmary") with some originals. By the time of the following year's "De Stijl" (meaning "The Style"), the media buzz surrounding the White Stripes had reached new heights. Of particular note was the duo's reception in the UK, where their music was lauded in national media, including The Daily Telegraph, The Sun and even Radio 4's Today programme — a show not normally known for its liberal music policy. The influential John Peel was quoted as comparing their importance to that of Jimi Hendrix and the Sex Pistols; although both those acts were originators, whereas the White Stripes were more clearly regarded as powerful interpreters. They became worldwide stars upon release of a third album, "White Blood Cells", followed by "Elephant" in 2003. The latter recorded at London's tiny Toe Rag Studios, using pre-60s analogue equipment and only eight tracks. Produced by Jack White, the highly-successful album offered a contrast to the digital conformity of music emerging in the new millennium, reaching the top ten in the U.S. and going platinum in the UK.

LYRICS

I'm thinkin' about my doorbell
When ya gonna ring it, when ya gonna ring it
Yeah, I'm thinkin' about my doorbell
When ya gonna ring it, when ya gonna ring it
Yeah, I'm thinkin' about my doorbell
When ya gonna ring it, when ya gonna ring it
yeah, I been thinkin' about my doorbell

Oh, well

Well women and children need kisses
Not the man in my life I know
And I been going to mystery misses
I respect the art of the show
Take back whan you said little girl
And while you're at it take yourself back too
Woman whatcha gonna do now, whatcha gonna do about it

I'm thinkin' about my doorbell
When ya gonna ring it, when ya gonna ring it
Yeah, I'm thinkin' about my doorbell
When ya gonna ring it, when ya gonna ring it oh
I'm thinkin' about my doorbell
When ya gonna ring it, when ya gonna ring it
Yeah, I been thinkin' about my doorbell

Oh, yeah

You don't seem to come around
Point your finger and make a sound
You don't seem to come around
Not since I said you knocked it down?

Oh, well

Make a sound and I'll make you feel right
Right at home, yeah
Yeah, right at home, yeah

Nobody got me waitin' in pain
But how come it's so easy to you
You don't strike me as the type to be callous
But your words seem so obtuse
But then again I know you feel guilty
And you tell me you want me again
But I don't need any of your pity
I got plenty of my own friends
They're all above me

And I've been thinkin' about my doorbell
When they gonna ring it, when they gonna ring it
Yeah, I've been thinkin' about the doorbell
When they gonna ring it, when they gonna ring it oh
I've been thinkin' about the doorbell
When they gonna ring it, when they gonna ring it
Yeah, I been thinkin' about the doorbell

Oh, well

They don't seem to come around
Push the finger and make a sound
They don't seem to come around
Maybe they they'll knock 'em down

Oh, well

Make a sound and I'll make you feel right
Right at home
Right at home

I'm thinkin' about my doorbell
When ya gonna ring it, when ya gonna ring it
I'm thinkin' about my doorbell
When ya gonna ring it, when ya gonna ring it
Yeah, I'm thinkin' about my doorbell
When ya gonna ring it, when ya gonna ring it
Yeah, I been thinkin' about my doorbell
And when you're gonna ring it, when you're gonna ring it

I'm thinkin' about my doorbell
When ya gonna ring it, when ya gonna ring it
Yeah, I'm thinkin' about my doorbell

Oh, oh well
