SWEET SAMMY J (blues vocal; guitar, presumably gospel vocal) was the usual performer credit used by Samuel J. Mickles, of Toledo, Ohio in the 1960s. He was born in Alabama, presumably at Camden, Wilcox County, on 27 March 1930. As PFC, he served in the US Army during World War II. As of 11 April 1950, Samuel Mickles (22, “Lift operator, Army Ordnance”, born Alabama), resided with his wife Louise (21, née Armstrong, born Ohio) in the household of her father, Robert Armstrong, at 1209 Crystal Street, near 1139 Girard Street, Toledo, Ohio. Next door at 1207 Crystal resided Kaiser Mickles (39, born Alabama) . Sweet Sammy J. recorded BABY, JUST YOU AND ME and HER HEART MUST BE MADE OF STONE (both Hi-Q #915F-5039), at Detroit, Michigan in about 1964. The composer credit for each was to Samuel Mickles (sic). Sammy’s associates included electric bassist Eli “Professor Easy” Garner and keyboardist Alvin “Tank” Jones. He backed keyboardist Rueben (Tutti) Jackson for WHEEL CITY #WC-0005. Samuel Mickle (sic) divorced Louise Mickle (sic) at Toledo, Ohio on 10 June 1971. By 1979 Sammy resided at Sandusky, Erie County, Ohio. By 2009 he was Pastor Samuel Mickles of Providence Baptist Church, Sandusky, Ohio. His health was deteriorating as of 2013. He died on 8 May 2020. He was buried at Ohio Veterans Home Cemetery, Sandusky, Erie County, Ohio, Section K, Row 9, Grave 17 info thanks to Bob Eagle
