Biography

Swans is a band from New York City, active from 1982 to 1997, reformed in 2010, founded & led by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist [a79651]. Marginally associated with the no wave scene initially, their original sound was slow and extremely heavy, best heard on the live album Public Castration Is a Good Idea. By the time Swans released twin albums Greed and Holy Money the music had sped up. Drum machines and samples were slightly more prominent. Michael Gira was joined vocally by Jarboe which gave the band a broader sonic range. Swans eventually broke up in 1997. In 2010, Michael Gira re-formed the band. A notable change was that post-reunion Swans did not have Jarboe as part of their group, creating tonal differences between post-reunion albums and older albums.

LYRICS

I am the mother of our daughter
My wings spread out across the sky
She fell from heaven but I caught her
The light flies out from in my thighs
And I will punish those that hurt her
And I will comfort those that nurture
I am the mother of our slaughter
I break your bones to feed our daughter
In buried dreams I sift the powder
Inside your throat I hid her thunder
I killed the daughter in my own mother
Now I’m my mother going under, under, under, under
The wolves are swimming in our harbor
Our lungs are breathing in black water
The heavens rain down knives of silver
To kiss our bodies in the river
So many minds, so much to choose
So many heartaches, so much to lose
So many angels, sailing through dust
So many teardrops, so many pearls
I’m calling you my light, I’m calling you my light
I’m calling you my light, I’m calling you home
Every night I bend my knees
I pray for you to comfort me
I pray for you to clean my eyes
I pray for you to wash my mind
