Biography
In Miami, just miles away from where the rich and famous play in beautiful South Beach, is the ghetto – the dirty bottom. The real Miami, the other side of I-95, the thug life side where the pimp and prostitutes play and the homeless lay; where the mothers cry and the babies die on the south side. That’s where many hood fellas, including the rap group Suicide, were born and bred. You know, streets never seen in Miami Vice. Suicide consists of Splack ‘Em and Shorty Pimp – two dread-headed brothers who look like they grew up in Brooklyn rather than the dirty south – and they were big pimpin’ way before the popular ghetto anthem by Jay Z blew up. Down together since elementary school, the S to the C (as their boyz refer to them) knew rap was their destiny since the days of the Fat Boys. “We knew one day we was gonna be doin’ this,” spits out Splack. “This is our destiny, man,” adds Shorty Pimp. “This is all we ever wanted to do. You know how some people dream about being doctors and lawyers – we wanted to be rap stars.” Don’t be misled by the name, because the rap duo doesn’t have dreams of taking their own lives. They do, however, plan on killing all the competition (lyrically speaking, that is). “Everyone looks at the word Suicide as a negative vibe – a negative energy,” states Shorty. “We’re changing a negative into a positive, dawg. Every letter in Suicide means something: Success, Unity, Individuality, Courage, Independence, Dedication, and Energy.” Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither were their careers. After putting in 13 years or so of hard work, Suicide inked a deal with local independent Futurescope Records and Films, who has dropped their debut disc, Big Doe, on January 30. The title track and first single is already in heavy radio rotation and has visited Billboard’s Hot Rap Singles Chart. Look for two new remixes to follow – a Spanish mix and a hot club mix featuring Miami’s own Uncle Luke (from 2Live Crew). “We kinda grew up watching Luke go through his struggles. He’s kinda the one that paved the way for Suicide (and many other dirty south bouncers).” Like many other artist from the sunshine state, their album is a collection of fast-paced sex and street-oriented bounce-infested tracks guaranteed to move that body. Because the Presidential election fiasco revolved around Florida, the guys insisted that, before the interview ended, they give their take of the drama – especially since they live in one of the counties where some of the votes were thrown out. “I voted and I know my people voted,” shouts Shorty. “We was helping out here picking up the people on buses and getting them to the polls, ‘cause we support our hood. The way they (white Republicans) mobbed us, they showed they run this, regardless of what we do. They tell us ‘Yeah, you could vote, no doubt, but it’s still our decision.’ That’s just my personal opinion and I want you to quote me. Ain’t nothing changed; this is still slavery, just in a modern form.” “That’s why we need to loc up and unite and do what’s right,” adds Splack. “They (the government) ain’t gonna do it for us. I love Tupac – that’s what he was talking, and he was right. That’s their worst nightmare (black unity). Let’s just loc up, network, and open some stores.” In many interviews with new underground or street artists, you don’t hear the dedication and community pride that Suicide promotes. What would the down south hustlaz be doing if they didn’t rhyme for living? “Let’s put it this way: Thank God for rap,” says Shorty Pimp. Splack comments on the harsh realities of life. “It’s grimy out here. We taking it from a negative to a positive, trying to show others from the hood there’s a better way. It’s real, but this is our world,”. Suicide was a gangsta rap group from Miami, Florida originally made up of Splackem, Mr. Hutson & Mr. Shorty Pimp. Their debut album, "Suicidal Days" was released in 1998 on Jam Right Records. In 2000, Suicide put out a single titled "Big Doe" (a remix version featuring Uncle Luke & The Kartel was also released in 2001), that was supposed to push a sophomore full length album with the same title but it didn't came out. Suicide was also featured on several local releases before vanishing in the early 2000's. R.I.P. Shorty Pimp
