Biography

Stelvio Cipriani (also knowns as Viostel, a play with Stel-Vio) born 20 August 1937 in Rome, Italy, was an Italian composer, most notable for his genre movie soundtracks. Though not coming from a musical background, as a child Cipriani was fascinated by his church's organ. His priest gave him his first music lessons and encouraged Cipriani and his family. Cipriani studied at Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome from the age of 14, then played with cruise ship bands, enabling him to meet [a37737]. Upon his return to Italy, he accompanied [a380929] on piano. His first soundtrack was for the Spanish/Italian spaghetti western [b][i]El precio de un hombre: The Bounty Killer[/b][/i], starring Tomas Milian, in 1966. It was followed by a well known score for [b][i]Un uomo, uno caballo, una pistola[/b][/i] / [i]The Stranger Returns[/i] / [i]Shoot First Laugh Last[/i] (1967), starring Tony Anthony. Cipriani became prolific in the Italian film world and was awarded a [b]Nastro d'Argento for Best Score[/b] for [b][i]The Anonymous Venetian[/b][/i] (1970). [b]Gangster Story[/b], one of the tracks from his maybe most famous movie soundtrack, [i][b]La polizia sta a guardare[/b][/i] / [i]The Great Kidnapping[/i] (available on [m154190]), a 1973 [i]polizziottesco[/i], was featured in Quentin Tarantino's [b][i]Death Proof[/i][/b], although uncredited. Stelvio Cipriani died in Rome on October 1, 2018.
