Biography
Salvator Gotta (18 May 1887, Montalto Dora — 7 June 1980, Rapallo) was an Italian novelist, playwright, and author of children's books. He is best known for writing lyrics of Giovinezza: Inno Trionfale del Partito Nazionale Fascista, the official hymn of [a=Benito Mussolini]'s National Fascist Party (PNF) between 1924 and 1943. Gotta was among the early supporters of the movement. In 1924, Mussolini commissioned him to write definitive lyrics for the new regime's official anthem. It was based on the wartime song of Arditi, the elite special troops that supported el Duce early on and took part in the "march on Rome" in October 1922. In turn, this "Arditi's Hymn" grew out of the popular pre-war song Giovinezza ("Youth"), composed by [a=Giuseppe Blanc] (1886—1969) with words by [a=Nino Oxilia] (1889—1917). With Gotta's new lyrics, Giovinezza became the official "triumphant anthem" of the National Fascist Party. Until the fall of the regime in July 1943, and during the short-lived Italian Social Republic, it was often played at formal ceremonies alongside or even before Marcia Reale d'Ordinanza ("Royal March of Ordinance"), the Kingdom's national anthem — to the great dismay of Vittorio Emanuele III (1869—1947), as it constantly reminded of de facto "diarchy," co-ruling between the King and Mussolini. Refusal to perform "Giovinezza" caused notable controversies, particularly for the renowned conductor [a=Arturo Toscanini] (who supported fascism early on but drastically changed his opinion). Since 1922, he had publicly declined to conduct "Giovinezza" at his concerts, earning the support of European anti-fascists. In April 1926, Mussolini refused to attend Puccini's Turandot premiere at La Scala once he learned Toscanini was conducting. In May 1931, before his concert at the [l=Teatro Comunale di Bologna], a Blackshirts squad physically assaulted Toscanini as he wouldn't play "Giovinezza." Thanks to the bravery of [a=Cesare Nordio] (1891—1977), director of the municipal music school who organized the event, and the protection of renowned composer [a=Ottorino Respighi], Toscanini and his wife narrowly escaped the arrest and immediately fled the country. After the Second World War, Salvator Gotta continued publishing novels but had limited success among adult readers. In the 1960s–70s, he had a brief comeback in children's literature, with historical youth novels and a column in [l=Topolino] magazine.
