Soul singer and songwriter. Born February 10, 1937 in Black Mountain, North Carolina, USA. Died February 24, 2025 in Manhattan, New York City, USA. From 1969, she had recorded 16 albums, solo or in duet. She was produced through the years by [a=Joel Dorn], [a=Arif Mardin], [a=Ralph MacDonald], [a=Eugene McDaniels], [a=Joe Ferla], [a=Joseph Brooks], [a=Eric Mercury], [a=William Eaton], [a=William Salter], [a=Bob Crewe & Bob Gaudio], [a=Marcus Miller], [a=Michael Omartian], [a=Jerry Hey], [a=Andy Goldmark], [a=Barry Miles]. Best known for her hit singles "Killing Me Softly", "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "Feel Like Makin' Love". She duetted with [a=Donny Hathaway] and [a=Peabo Bryson], recording two albums with each one of them. In 1981, she recorded the soundtrack of "Bustin Loose" and sang the title song of the movie "Making Love" (1982), written by [a=Burt Bacharach]. A duet with [a=Maxi Priest] entitled "Set The Night To Music" was released in 1991. Her godson was jazz/funk keyboardist [a=Bernard Wright].
