Biography

Hungarian-born composer best known for his film scores. Born April 18, 1907, Budapest, Austro-Hungarian empire. Died July 27, 1995, Los Angeles, California, USA. Rózsa was a child prodigy and studied the violin from the age of five and went to Leipzig to study music at the Leipzig Conservatory with Hermann Grabner in 1926. While living in Paris from 1931 and then in London from 1935, he was commissioned by [a=Alexander Korda] to write the score for film Knight Without Armour (1937). While composing the score for the film The Thief of Bagdad (1940), Rózsa moved to California and joined in 1948 the staff of MGM Pictures and remained with them until 1962 scoring many of the major productions of the fifties. He was nominated for 17 Academy Awards, winning three Oscars for Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture for: [i]Spellbound[/i] (1945), [i]A Double Life[/i] (1947), and [i]Ben-Hur[/i] (1959).
