Biography
Spanish singer Marta Sánchez was born on May 8, 1966, in Madrid (Spain). The daughter of bass-baritone [a2009186], her godfather was renowned opera singer [a882024]. She began singing in 1984 with [a991230] (although she did not record with them), and soon after, sound engineer [a812806] invited her to replace Vicky Larraz as the lead vocalist of [a689016]. She remained with the band from 1986 to 1991, becoming a social phenomenon in Spain and taking her first steps into the international market. Considered the Queen of Pop in Spain, Marta Sánchez is a singer and songwriter who burst onto the music scene in the mid-1980s, captivating audiences with her charisma, powerful voice, and commanding presence. She was the first Spanish artist to record an album with producer [a49758] (producer of Madonna and David Bowie, among others). In 1993, she launched her solo career with the album Mujer, achieving massive success with the single Desesperada, and surpassing one million copies sold. Her solo career led her to sell over 10 million albums worldwide and to gain both national and international recognition, particularly in Latin American countries, consolidating her status as a major artist. Due to her popularity and long-standing trajectory, she is considered one of the most important female singers in Spanish music history. Recently, Billboard magazine named her one of the 50 Greatest Latin Pop Artists of All Time. Her musical legacy spans 15 albums: 4 with Olé Olé and 11 as a solo artist (7 studio albums, 3 compilation, and 1 live album), along with numerous singles and contributions to film soundtracks such as Tangled, Curled and Donkey Xote. With Carlos Baute, she released the global anthem Colgando en tus manos, which broke all records: 39 weeks at number 1 on Los 40 Principales, 10 platinum certifications, and over 1.5 billion streams between YouTube and Spotify.
