Biography
Manuel De Almeida (1922 - 1995) was a Portuguese fado singer. Manuel Ferreira de Almeida was born on April 27, 1922 in Lisbon and died on December 3, 1995 in Cascais. For many, he was the last great representative of 'castiço' fado. He started singing at the age of 10. His debut was at the Verbena dos Paulistas, in Lisbon (where Fernando Farinha also received his first awards as a child). Since then, he has attended the most diverse fado retreats. However, it took him a while to become a professional. Manuel de Almeida was a manufacturer and designer of women's footwear. He was also a great sportsman, regularly playing soccer and athletics. He only turned professional at the age of 28, at Tipoia, then run by Adelina Ramos. He stayed there for 12 years. He then moved on to various clubs, such as Estribo, Retiro do Malhão, Faia and Olímpia Clube. At the invitation of Fernanda Maria, he spent 11 years at Lisboa à Noite, in Bairro Alto. This was followed by 16 years at Forte Dom Rodrigo, owned by the fado singer Rodrigo. In 1964, he took part in Jorge Brum do Canto's film Fado Corrido, alongside major fado figures such as Amália Rodrigues and Carlos Ramos. He recorded more than a dozen albums. He was known for his voice and his very peculiar way of singing, in songs such as “Pequenas Felicidades”, “Embuçado”, “Teus Olhos são dois Garotos”, “Penitência para o meu Fado”, “Antigamente”, “Lugar Vazio”, “Quando Voltares”, “Como te quis e te quero”, “Há muito quem cante o fado”, “Fado da despedida” or “Fado antigo”. He also wrote fado melodies and/or lyrics himself, such as “Aguarela Fadista” (Fado Alexandrino), “Por te querer Tanto” (with J. Lopes), “Tempos que já lá vão” (with José Marques) or “Dias de Feira da Ladra” (with Alfredo Correiro). He received several awards, including the Press Oscar, a diploma from the Rhode Island Senate and the medal from the city of Saint-Serves. In 1987, Rão Kyao rescued Manuel de Almeida and produced one of the most popular albums of his career: Eu fadista me confesso. A concept by Rão Kyao himself, it took Manuel de Almeida down unexpected paths, which led some fans of his voice to say they didn't recognize him. The album contains some songs that stick in the memory, such as Eu Fadista me Confesso, Voz do Tejo, Fado dos Sonhos, No Azul de um Azulejo or Quero Cantar. In addition to this album, his discography includes titles available on CD, such as Fados do Coração (Strauss, 1969), Fado e um Estilo (1989, Ediclube), Manuel de Almeida (Movieplay, 1994) and Fado (Movieplay, 1996). In 1994 he was honored for his 50-year career at a party at the São Luís Theatre. He died the following year.
