Biography

Kenny G was an artistic alias of [a=Kenneth Goldsmith], an American poet, music critic, and [l=UbuWeb] founding editor. Do NOT confuse with a smooth-jazz saxophonist [a96114]. Goldsmith primarily used the "Kenny G" alias as a radio DJ, hosting a weekly show at [l=WFMU] independent radio station from 1995 till 2010. In 2003, Goldsmith released one of his Kenny G's radio shows as [Link] CD in 2003 (distributed by [l=Soleilmoon Recordings]). It was a live, on-air collaboration with [a=People Like Us], a prominent British sound collagist who used to host several WFMU programs of her own (DO or DIY, for instance, or [Link] with Ergo Phizmiz). While running his WFMU show as 'Kenny G,' Goldsmith received numerous misaddressed emails to his more famous namesake, the "other" Kenny G (pseudo jazz sax player [a=Kenny Gorelick]). In 2006, he published a book-length collection of unedited "Kenny G Letters" at LA-based micropublisher Make Now Press. Goldsmith also regularly recited some of the Kenny G letters, both on-air and during public readings, which eventually led to a collaboration with [a369376], an aspiring US composer and experimental artist from Connecticut (who also happened to have a "celebrity" namesake saxophonist, [a=John Zorn]). Kenny and Jonathan recorded [Link] online album in Nov 2007, freely available at [l=UbuWeb]. Goldsmith also wrote some album reviews and essays under the Kenny G alias, namely "A Popular Guide to Unpopular Music," initially published in 2000 in the American Music Center's webzine (and on Kenny's WFMU homepage). For this manuscript, Kenneth interviewed [a=Joan La Barbara], [a=David Behrman], [a=David Soldier], [a=Stephen Vitiello], and [a=Morton Subotnick]—analyzing how they managed to combine well-established music careers with professional jobs in the record industry, science, education, etc.

LYRICS

I heard he sang a lullaby
I heard he sang it from his heart
When I found out
thought I would die
Because that lullaby was mine
I heard he sealed it with a kiss
He gently kissed her cherry lips
I found that so hard to believe
Because his kiss
belonged to me

How could an angel break my heart
Why didn't he catch my falling star

I wish I didn't wish so hard
Maybe I wished our love apart
How could an angel break my heart

I heard her face
was white as rain
Soft as a rose
that blooms in May
He keeps her picture in a frame
And when he sleeps he calls her name
I wonder if she makes him smile

The way he used to smile at me
I hope she doesn't make him laugh

Because his laugh belongs to me

How could an angel break my heart
Why didn't he catch my falling star

I wish I didn't wish so hard
Maybe I wished our love apart
How could an angel break my heart

Oh my soul is dying, it's crying
I'm trying to understand
Please help me

How could an angel break my heart
Why didn't he catch my falling star

I wish I didn't wish so hard
Maybe I wished our love apart
How could an angel break my heart
