Biography

Kazimierz Stabrowski (21 November {O.S. 10 November} 1869, Kruplyany, Grodno Governorate, Russian Empire — 10 June 1929, Garwolin, Second Polish Republic) was a Polish painter and educator, one of the crucial representatives of Symbolism and Art Nouveau in Młoda Polska, the "Young Poland" artistic movement, alongside [a=Władysław Podkowiński], Jacek Malczewski, and [a=Edward Okuń]. Stabrowski was a theosophist and co-founded the first lodges for [l=The Theosophical Society] in Poland. Between 1887 and 1897, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, attending [a=Ilya Repin]'s workshop, among others. After the graduation, Kazimierz spent a year in Paris, where he studied at Académie Julian with [a=Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant]; during his French tenure, Stabrowski discovered Impressionism and "Fauvism" styles and befriended philosopher [a=Henri Bergson]. In 1902, he became a member of Towarzystwo Artystów Polskich "Sztuka" ("Sztuka" Society of Polish Artists) in Kraków. The following year, Kazimierz Stabrowski moved to Warsaw, where he joined [a=Konrad Krzyżanowski] (1872—1922) in the plans to reopen his private art school (shut down after the January Uprising). In March 1904, he became the first director of the Academy of Fine Arts; Stabrowski's most famous pupil, undoubtedly, was a renowned Lithuanian painter and composer, [a=Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis] (1875—1911), and he introduced Čiurlionis to theosophical ideas. In 1909, the Pedagogue Council and Tutelary Committee pressured Kazimierz to resign from the faculty due to his increasing involvement in Western esotericism.
