Biography
[a292131] from Gorinchem played in [a14063731] and [a14997037]. When he met [a501741] his band changed into KANE (1998). KANE is a Dutch rock band from The Hague (Netherlands). They became very successful over a short period of time. After their first meeting in the summer of 1997 on the Scheveningen beach, [a501741] and [a292131] meet again in September at Dinand’s house on Laan van Meerdervoort 163 in The Hague. There, in a small 3-by-2-meter basement, the songs Damn Those Eyes and Just Go are written in a single evening. Dennis suggests performing as soon as possible and “knows a drummer.” A week later, the bassist is found spontaneously at café Nighttown in Rotterdam. With barely any rehearsals, the very first gig takes place on Sunday, November 23, at the Rotterdam music café De Vagebond, with Sammy de Fretes on drums and Mike Smit on bass. The band is born, but without a name. Just before the show, Sammy proposes The Little Poquitos. And so it happened. That afternoon, De Vagebond was on fire. The name was soon replaced by Docks Ahead, and by the end of 1997 by Citizen Kane. During 1998 Citizen Kane rehearses at Dinand’s beach club Mecca on the Zwarte Pad in Scheveningen, while Dennis works full-time at the Free Record Shop headquarters. The band is invited by RTV Rijnmond for their first studio recording session, where early versions of the newly written songs Damn Those Eyes, Rescue Me, and Hands are recorded. After sold-out shows at music café De Paap and the Asta in The Hague, the band is approached by major record label BMG with an offer for a demo and single contract. With this deal, songs like Damn Those Eyes and Hands are further developed, giving the band the chance to release a first single. If successful, even a full album is considered. 1999 is the “make or break” year for KANE; this is the year the band is introduced to the Dutch public. At the last moment, the initial single choice Why (which was never released) is replaced by a new track: Where Do I Go Now?. To introduce themselves to the press and radio stations, KANE performs in the parking lot of record label BMG, an event that would have major consequences. KANE also plays at the opening of the Hard Rock Café alongside [a12642], as well as supporting shows at the Melkweg and at the very first Flowerpop festival in the afternoon. The video for Where Do I Go Now? is recorded on a small budget with their friend and director [a2210750] in the Schiehallen in Delft. 3FM DJ [a7201347] is the very first to play KANE on the country’s biggest radio station that evening, quickly followed by 3FM DJ [a552311], who adds the band to the daily playlist. From that moment on, the singles Where Do I Go Now? and Damn Those Eyes receive heavy airplay on radio station 3FM and music channel TMF. The band achieves its first Top 40 listings, and record label BMG gives the green light to start recording KANE’s debut album [m1035096] in the fall of 1999.
