Biography
American country singer-songwriter and autoharp player. Born June 23, 1929, in Maces Spring, Virginia; died May 15, 2003, in Nashville, Tennessee. Second child of [a=Ezra J. Carter] and [a=Maybelle Carter], sister of [a=Anita Carter] and [a=Helen Carter (2)], with whom she performed as a member of [a=The Carter Family] starting at age 10. On March 1, 1968, June married country singer-songwriter [a=Johnny Cash], with whom she had performed since 1964. Continued to be professionally known as June Carter even after their marriage. Her biggest hit, co-written with [a=Merle Kilgore], was Johnny Cash's 1963 version of "[i]Ring Of Fire[/i]," though the song was originally recorded by June's sister, [a=Anita Carter].
