Biography

Born in Seymour, Indiana on October 7, 1951. He started out for a brief period of time as a glam rocker, but then tried out for a solo career with his first album Chestnut Street Incident released by former [a=David Bowie] manager, [a=Tony DeFries] on the Mainman (division of MCA) label. That album was a complete flop partly due to the fact that the record label wanted to mold John into something he was not (a pretty boy ala James Dean) and the fact that the album consisted of only 6 originals and 5 cover songs. It was also the label's idea to release the album under the name Johnny Cougar which Mellencamp did not approve of. It wasn't until the release of American Fool, released this time under the moniker John Cougar, which featured his most well-known hit to date, "Jack & Diane" that he really made it big; the album stayed at #1 on the charts for nine weeks. Following that was Uh-huh which would be his first release under the moniker John Cougar Mellencamp; the name he would stick by until he gradually dropped the "Cougar" and just went by his given name John Mellencamp. A heart attack in 1994 prevented him from touring for one of his most famous albums to date Dance Naked. John has collaborated with Me'Shell Ndegeocello and India Arie over the years. Inducted into Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2008 (Performer).

LYRICS

I may not be a pillar in my town
Or have the kind of job you think that I should.
I know you see me out running around with a couple of people
You think are no good.
I've tried to clean it up a couple of times, but I'm a
Backslidin' fool when it comes to walkin' that line.
It's OK. You think you're better than me.
Yeah, that's all right, girl, that's all right.

[Chorus:]
'Cause I'm close enough for rock and roll,
Close enough for rock and roll,
Close enough for rock and roll.
I'm close enough for a little rock and roll.

Yeah, it's true, I don't plan my time.
When you're lookin' for me, I'm hard to find.
I know you don't wanna run around with me.
With my socks fallin' down, girl, I'm just poor company.

I've seen your face, and it's a one-eyed jack.
We like to talk about this or that.
None of these things really interest me.
Hey, that's all right, girl, that's all right.

[Chorus:]
'Cause I'm close enough for rock and roll,
Close enough for rock and roll,
Close enough for rock and roll.
I'm close enough for a little rock.

I know you think I'm a rough cut, baby.
I ain't as rough cut as I am the blood on your hands.
Gonna love that blood right off of your hands.

[Chorus:]
Yeah, that's all right, girl, that's all right.
Close enough for rock and roll,
Close enough for rock and roll,
Close enough for rock and roll.
I'm close enough for a little rock and roll
