Biography

American hip hop DJ/producer. Born: 7 February 1974 in Detroit, Michigan, USA. Died: 10 February 2006 in Los Angeles, California, USA (aged 32). James Dewitt Yancey, better known by his stage name J Dilla or Jay Dee, was an American record producer who emerged from the mid-1990s underground hip-hop scene in Detroit, Michigan. He began his career as a member of the group [a=Slum Village], and made his name with [a=Common], [a=A Tribe Called Quest], and as [a=Jaylib] in which he collaborated with [a=Madlib]. He was also a member of the production team trio The Ummah with [a=Q-Tip] and [a=Ali Shaheed Muhammad]. He started his career under the name Jay Dee (based on his initials) but used the name J Dilla from 2001 onward. Many critics believe his work to have had a major influence on his peers and that he embodied the neo-soul sound, playing a defining yet understated role during the sub-genre's rise (roughly from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s). LA-based producer and MC, Madlib, began collaborating with J Dilla, and the pair formed the group Jaylib in 2002, releasing an album called "Champion Sound" in 2003. After J Dilla relocated from Detroit to LA in 2004, they toured as Jaylib in Spring 2004. He moved from his native Detroit to Los Angeles to live with his mother after being diagnosed in 2003. It was later revealed that he suffered from TTP, a rare blood disease, and Lupus, affecting the immune-system. J Dilla's illness and medication caused dramatic weight loss from 2003 onwards, forcing him to publicly confirm speculation about his health in 2004. Despite a slower output of major releases and production credits in 2004-2005, his cult status remained strong within his core audience, as evident by unauthorized circulation of his underground "beat tapes" (instrumental, and raw working materials), mostly through internet file sharing. Articles in music publications URB (March 2004) and XXL (June 2005) confirmed rumors of ill health and hospitalization during this period, but these were downplayed by J himself. The seriousness of his condition became public in November 2005 when J Dilla toured Europe performing from a wheelchair. His last album released during his lifetime, "Donuts", was released on [l=Stones Throw Records] on 7 Feb 2006, Dilla's 32nd birthday, and the first one in years he didn't spend in hospital. Three days later, on 10 February 2006, he died at his home in LA. According to his mother, [a977167], the cause was cardiac arrest. The founding of the James Dewitt Yancey Foundation was announced in May 2006 by his mother [a977167], to honour her son's legacy and to help raise awareness and funding for Lupus research by organising continued events to aid underprivileged children gain quality arts training, primarily in the field of music. He is brother to [a=Illa J] and his father was [a9207571]

LYRICS

Yo! {"I need the money") McNasty Presents
("For awesome amounts of dough") Yeah-yeah-yeah...
("I need the money") ("Awesome amounts of dough")
("I need the money") Turn it up
("I need - I need the money")
[Common:] ("What money do to a n... ")
Where you at? Ruff Draft muh'fucker ("I need the money")
("What money do to a n... ")
("Once again, I need the money")

[J Dilla:]
Yo, I'm thinkin of a master plan
I'm blingin with the cash in hand
I got a muh'fuckin right to shine nigga
I paid my dues, I earned this cake I abuse
I burn the paper the way I choose
I gotta, handle my B.I., and I do
And hold the T-I-N-Y tool
With a mind of it's own, no tellin what it might do
Mess with my loot and it might pop
It might lock, it might not, it might SHOOT~!
And it's not the chance to take, just like it's not the answer
Who out for the paper? Hands UP
Lay back and pay that dancer
Holla if you ever been placed in handcuffs
Survival the name of the game, you wanna play?
You wanna race don't wait for the bang!
Let's go

[Chorus:]
Gotta go and get the money - worldwide, let's get it
Gotta go and get the money - can't stop hustlin baby
Gotta go and get the money - ("the money") it's for you
Gotta go and get the dough - okay! Mo-ney

[J Dilla:]
(Gotta go and) get these nuts
Yes it reads cheese or bust
Dilla with the gangsta shit
Now let me say it again, and say it with feeling
Dilla with the gangsta shit~! Here to spit the flame
Here to get the bank and split
Here to twist the dank and hit it
Here to twist the game, here to flip this change and spend it
Down here in the valley of death we walk that
Talk crap and wind up wet in the alley
Survival, the name of the game
And everywhere I go they play it the same
So stay mindin your own and grind and roll
Keep shinin, keep headlinin shows
And get that dough let's eat my nigga
Let's not be broke next week my nigga~!

[Chorus:]
Cause you know how we do when we get the money - so keep stackin your chips
Gotta go and get the money - Dill' keep mackin your bitch
Gotta go and get the money - don't stop, just do it
Gotta go and get the dough - we gon' rock on and, yeah

Gotta go and... on and, on, yeah
Rock on and, we don't quit
Rock on and on and on and
Rock on and, yeah!
Rock on and... on and... on... rock on [echoes and fades]
