HAROLD "Hal" H. LURIE, M.D., age 93, passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at 3:05 p.m. of natural causes. Hal was born in Springfield to a Lithuanian immigrant, Ed Lurie and his wife Jeanette. He had two brothers, Sidney, the oldest, who died in 1989 and his kid brother, Don, who was shot down flying his B29's over Tokyo in May 1945. Undoubtedly, the activity Hal is most proud of is his work with the Singing Doctors of Springfield. This group sang at medical meetings all over the country for over 30 years, and had a hellva good time doing it. They recorded seven albums of musical medical parodies. They sold the records and proceeds went to a Student Loan Fund. Over the 30 years they raised over $400,000 and gave small loans to over 200 medical students. After the group stopped singing, they took the money from the loan fund as well as donations and transferred the funds to the University of Missouri Medical school and set up an Endowed Scholarship Fund. That fund is now valued at $564,000 and gives one medical student in each of the 4 classes a stipend of $6000 a year. Since 2003 they have graduated 6 Singing Doctor Scholars - all of whom received a minimum of $20,000 during medical school.
