Biography

Scottish guitarist, singer and songwriter. Rafferty was best known for his solo hits "Baker Street", "Right Down the Line" and, with the band Stealers Wheel, "Stuck in the Middle with You". Born into a working-class family in Paisley (Scotland), his mother taught him both Irish and Scottish folk songs as a boy; later, he was influenced by the music of The Beatles and Bob Dylan. He joined the folk-pop band The Humblebums - whose line-up included Billy Connolly - in 1969, but left in 1971 and recorded his first solo album "Can I Have My Money Back". Rafferty and Joe Egan formed the group Stealers Wheel in 1972, producing several hits. In 1978, he recorded his second solo album, "City to City", which includes "Baker Street", his most popular song and a radio mainstay. Brother of [a=Jim Rafferty]. Born: 16th April 1947, in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Died at age 63 on 4th January 2011 at his daughter's home in Stroud, Gloucestershire, England, UK (liver and kidney problems).

LYRICS

Well here I am, back in town Just as the night is comin' down Warm wind blowin' through the trees I watch them swing, I watch them sway Lie here waiting for the day. Sleep won't come, I need a drink Stop my head, don't wanna think Wishing I could be with you But I know you're so far away And I'm here waiting for the day. Water of life pour your light down on me Take me out of this darkness, sweet star of the sea Water so sweet you can open my eyes You can bring down the rain on this desert so dry. Out on the street, shadows fall Silence speaks, I hear it call City of the living dead Count the lights on the motorway Lie here waiting for the day (alright). Water of life pour your light down on me Take me out of this darkness, sweet star of the sea Water so sweet you can open my eyes You can bring down the rain on this desert so dry. Yes here I am, back in town Just as the night is comin' down Warm wind blowin' through the trees I watch them swing, I watch them sway Lie here waiting for the day (alright)
