Biography
Death Grips is an experimental multi-genre group from Sacramento, CA, formed in 2010. Their music and live performances consist of vocals from Stefan “MC Ride” Burnett and production from Zach Hill and Andy Morin. They released their first mixtape, [m364631] on April 25, 2011, with their most popular song, “Guillotine,” on that project. Early in the following year, they signed to [l1005] and released their first studio album, [m429783]. They teased their second studio album via an ARG in August of that year, but [l1005] didn’t want them to release the album yet. They did anyway, leaking it themselves, naming it [m590239], and getting dropped from [l1005] as a result. They started their own label in 2013, called [l246430] and surprise-released [m648022] on November 13 of that year. June 8, 2014 saw the release of the first half of [m814129] On July 2nd, 2014, the band officially announced their disbanding via a note on their Facebook page, but promised the second half of [m814129] to be released. It leaked as [r35694229] on March 19, 2015, and the entire album was released officially on the 31st. On October 21, 2015, they announced they ‘might make some more’ music together, and released a new album, [m996986] in 2016. Their latest album, [m1383696], was released in 2018. The band’s music has been described as punk rock, hip-hop, noise, industrial, and electronic. Their sound ranges from minimalistic and trunk-rattling heaviness (such as on “No Love”), to rapping about dark subjects over heavily distorted samples (like on “I’ve Seen Footage”). They have also released two entirely instrumental albums, [r6489505] and [m983497], which feature abrasive and violent electronic beats and some guitars. Frontman Stefan Burnett’s violent and cryptic lyrics draw inspiration from a struggle both against himself and against the world at large, focusing on themes of individualism, paranoia, mental illness, drug use, occultism, and the emotionally degenerative nature of modern society. On February 8, 2025, news broke that Death Grips had split up after a fan who created a show flier for Andy Morin posted a screenshot of a DM with him in a Reddit AMA where Andy signaled that Death Grips was over. However, on November 5th, 2025, the band announced that they would be making a new studio album, stating, quote; "The Writing and recording of our next album is underway. We’re looking forward to the new Death Grips record. -Stefan and Zach". Current members: Stefan Burnett (aka MC Ride) – vocals and lyrics (2010–present) Zach Hill – drums, electronic drums, production, lyrics (2010–present) Andy Morin (aka Flatlander) – audio engineering, production, keyboards, lyrics (2010–2023) Former members: Mexican Girl (Liz Liles) – vocals and lyrics (2010–2011) Info Warrior (Christian Oldham aka "Megazord") – production, live visuals (2010–2011) Touring members: Nick Reinhart - guitar, sampler (2023–present)
