American composer, songwriter, and jazz pianist. Born June 14, 1929, New York City, New York, USA. Died November 18, 2004, (aged 75) New York, New York, USA. Coleman was inducted into Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1981. Songs he's known for include "Witchcraft", "The Best Is Yet to Come". and "Big Spender" to name just a few. Coleman wrote the scores for Broadway's [i]Barnum[/i], [i]On The Twentieth Century[/i], [i]I Love My Wife[/i], [i]Seesaw[/i], [i]Sweet Charity[/i], [i]Little Me[/i] and [i]Wildcat[/i]. Among the hit songs for which he has written the music are "If My Friends Could See Me Now", "Big Spender", "Hey, Look Me Over", "The Best Is Yet To Come" and "Real Live Girl". Coleman was nominated for an Oscar for the movie version of [i]Sweet Charity[/i] (1970), starring Shirley MacLaine. Coleman charted once as a performer in the U.S. and seventeen times in the U.S. & U.K. as a songwriter. "Chloe", a funky disco instrumental cracked the U.S. charts at #29 on the adult contemporary chart. His top written songs included "If My Friends Could See Me Now" by Linda Clifford, which hit #1 in the U.S. Dance, #68 R&B, and #50 in the U.K. in 1978 and "The Autumn Waltz" by Tony Bennett, which hit #18 in 1956 (co-written by Bob Hilliard).
