Biography

Born: May 5, 1981, Southampton, Hampshire, England Soulful vocalist whose early releases were a defining factor in the UK garage sound. More recently he has been moving towards a standard RNB style. David was born in Holyrood, Southampton, Hampshire, the son of Tina (née Loftus), a retail assistant at Superdrug, and George David, a carpenter. David's father is a Grenadian and David's mother is an English Jew related to the founders of the Accurist watch-making company; David's maternal grandfather was an Orthodox Jew and his maternal grandmother a convert to Judaism. David's parents separated when he was eight and he was raised by his mother. He attended Bellemoor School. David's father played bass in a reggae band called Ebony Rockers. As a teen, David began accompanying his father to local dance clubs, where DJs let him take the microphone. David's earliest exposure came when he worked on a b-side to British group Damage's cover of "Wonderful Tonight". He then started doing vocals for a few tracks with garage act Artful Dodger. The song "Re-Rewind", from the Artful Dodger album It's All About the Stragglers, hit Number 2 on the UK charts in 1999; thus, paving the way for a solo career. David's first single, "Fill Me In", released on Colin Lester's and Ian McAndrew's Wildstar Records made him the youngest solo male artist ever to reach Number 1 in the United Kingdom (he was 18 years old at the time). This was the first of a string of four Top 10 singles from his debut album Born To Do It, which eventually sold more than seven million units worldwide, earning multi-platinum status in more than 20 countries. The song "Key To My Heart", taken from the US version of the album, was also featured on the award-winning Warner Brothers animated film Osmosis Jones.

LYRICS

Verse 1
I was checking this girl next door when her parents went out
She'd phone say hey boy come on right around
So i knock on the door you were standing with a bottle of red
wine ready to pour
Dressed in long black satin laced to the floor
So i went in
Then we sat down start kissing caressing
Told me 'bout jacuzzi
Sounded interesting
So we jumped right in
All calls diverted to answerphone
Please leave a message after the tone
I mean me & her parents were kinda cool
But they were the fine line between me
& you
We were just doing things young people in love do
Parents trying to find out what we were up to

Chorus

Saying why were you creeping 'round last night
Why could i see two shadows moving in your bedroom light
Now your dressed in black when i left you were dressed in white
Can you fill me in?
Calls diverted to answerphone
Red wine bottle half the contents gone
Midnight return jacuzzi turned on
Can you fill me in?

Verse 2

Whenever the coast was clear & she'd ask me to come
I'd say hey girl
Come on right around
So she knocked at the door
I was standing with the keys in my hand to the 4x4
Jumped in my ride
Checking that noboby saw
The club we went
We got down
Bounce bounce to the rhythm
Saw it was early morning
Thought we'd better be leaving
So i gave you my jacket for you to hold
Told you to wear it cos you felt cold
I mean me & her didn't to break the rules
Weren't trying to play your mum & dad for fools
We were just doing things young people in love do
Parents trying to find out what we were up to

Chorus

Saying why can't you keep your promises no more
Saying you'll be home by 12 come strolling in at 4
Out with your girls but leaving with the boy next door
Can you fill me in?
Wearing a jacket who's property
Said you'd been queuing for a taxi
But you left all your money on the tv
Can you fill me in?

Middle 8

All they seem to do
Is be checking up on you baby
Watching are every move
Think someday the might approve

(Chorus 1-2 then fade)
