Biography
Coven originally materialized in Indianapolis, Indiana during the late 1960s. According to "Witchcraft" producer [a=Bill Traut], band members began their early gigs by being carried onstage in coffins. Alongside England’s [a=Black Widow (5)], Coven are credited as being one of the very first rock bands to embrace occult imagery and outright Satanic references. They are recognized as being the band that first introduced the 'Sign of the Horns' to rock and pop culture. The band released their first album, "Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls", in 1969 after signing a contract with [l=Mercury Records] in their own blood. [a=Tom Laughlin (2)] asked [a=Jinx Dawson] to record the "One Tin Soldier" song for his "Billy Jack" movie. It was written by [a=Dennis Lambert] and [a=Brian Potter], and originally released in 1969 by the Canadian group The Original Caste (#34). Coven's recording charted three times, first in 1971 (#26), in 1973 (#79), and a re-entry of the original version in 1974 (#73) on the Billboard Hot 100, and was a top 10 hit in the Cash Box chart. The song was named #1 Most Requested Song in 1971 and 1973 by American Radio Broadcasters. "Nightengale" penned by Dawson, which charted as a hot pick on Billboard & Cashbox. Third album "Blood on the Snow" was put out on [l=Buddah Records] in 1974 for which they also made a video for the LP title track, seven years before MTV started in 1981.
