Biography

American jazz tenor saxophonist. Born November, 21, 1904, St. Joseph, Missouri, USA – died May, 19, 1969, New York, NY, USA. Also known as Bean or Hawk, Coleman Hawkins started piano lessons when he was five. He switched to the cello at the age of seven and two years later Coleman began to work on the tenor saxophone, turning professional by the age of 12. In August 1923, he began to record with [a307323], whose orchestra also featured [a38201] at this time. Following a period working in Europe (1934-39), shortly after his return to New York, he performed his classic version of "Body and Soul" almost by chance at the end of a session for RCA Victor. For the rest of his career, he mainly led his own groups, playing with [a145256], [a64694], [a23755] and [a229498], among others.

LYRICS

My heart is sad and lonely
For you I sigh, for you dear only
Why haven't you seen it
I'm all for you body and soul
I spend my days in longing
And wondering why it's me you're wronging
I tell you I mean it
I'm all for you body and soul

I can't believe it
It's hard to conceive it
That you'd turn away romance
Are you pretending
It looks like the ending
Unless I could have just one more chance to prove, dear

My life a wreck you're making
You know I'm yours for just the taking
I'd gladly surrender myself to you body and soul

My life a wreck you're making
You know I'm yours for the very taking
I'd gladly surrender myself to you body and soul
