Biography

Lead Vocalist Jake Segura grew up in a small town where his taste in music was not appreciated, so he never pursued songwriting seriously as a teenager. He became further discouraged from the industry after being kicked out his first band because of his lack of vocal ability. As a college student, he began to struggle with manic depression, anxiety, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. After spending days in bed at a time and flunking out of school, he found himself too afraid to ask for help for fear of the judgement of others. In November of 2015, he attempted suicide. Segura penned the lyrics to Let It Burn on a napkin from his hospital bed, a song that would be released on the band’s debut E.P. Caroline. That experience gave him the drive to finally take his pursuit of music seriously with a strong desire to write music that would help combat mental illness stigma and help others struggling to know they are not alone. After many attempts at getting a band together the final lineup was completed with Jake Segura on vocals, Matt Duffney and Kooper Hanosky on guitar, Wonitta on Bass, and Tyler Nichols on drums. The band name Citizen Soldier is the band’s attempt to personify the battles waged inside and the band’s goal to shine a light on the everyday struggles of those who feel overlooked and unappreciated. New to the Salt Lake City scene in early 2017, Citizen Soldier is in its infancy but working relentlessly to make a name for themselves. Since Citizen Soldier’s debut in 2017, the Salt Lake City-based music group has been all about honoring those who fight battles every day that others dismiss or judge them for. Those battling mental illness, abuse, stigmatization, and being ostracised have embraced their music as a representation of their own stories and struggles. As the community has grown and word has spread, many have found a refuge of survivors to share in their pain.

LYRICS

At the bottom of a bottle filled with pills
Tables turned
Lessons learned
A psych ward napkin changed the life I tried to kill
With three words: let it burn
But I'd never change a damn thing
Was born in 2016
The day that I stood face-to-face with death
When my world started caving
It [?] me and it made me
A poet for what people leave unsaid

Where do you run when you're at your limit?
Tell me who can you trust to be the one to witness
You come undone
'Causе I don't feel like someone I can lovе
So close to choosing death over the feeling of not being enough
I wish I could heal and say it's done
But I don't know how I'm gonna fight when I'm at my
Limit, limit
Yeah, I think I've reached my
Limit, limit
But I'll learn how to live with it

I wasn't well but I had peace
I had hope
Normal things
Thought if I got the help I need
It could fix everything
I trusted medicine to save me
Feels like it killed me
With [?] forgot
Now I live with PTSD and pray that there's an ending
'Cause I don't wanna die inside my head

So tell me where do you run when you're at your limit?
(Where do you run, where do you run)
And tell me who can you trust to be the one to witness
You come undone
'Cause I don't feel like someone I can love
Don't think it's worth it talking 'bout the thoughts I tried to end with a gun
I just wanna heal and say it's done
(Don't wanna run)
But I don't know how I'm gonna fight when I'm at my
Limit, limit
Yeah, I think I've reached my
Limit, limit
But I'll learn how to live with it

If you're sick in ways that no one understands
Hope you know
You're not alone
If we walk through hell we might as well hold hands
We should make this a home

Where do you run when you're at your limit?
(Where do you run? Where do you run?)
Tell me who can you trust to be the one to witness
(When you)
You come undone
'Cause I don't feel like someone I can love
So close to choosing death over the feeling of not being enough
I wish I could heal and say it's done
(Don't wanna run)
But I don't know how I'm gonna fight when I'm at my
Limit, limit
Yeah I think I've reached my
Limit, limit
But together we can live with it
