Biography

Funk band, formed in the mid-1960's in Los Angeles, California. Successful both as a backing group to others (most prominent of them being [a=Bill Cosby]) as well as a group in their own right, best known for their 1970-hit [i]Express Yourself[/i]. Post [a699152] The original line-up comprised of bandleader [a156413] (vocals, guitar, piano), [a310689] (guitar), [a387643] (piano, trumpet), [a211644] (bass), [a211643] (drums), [a387646] and [a743949] (both sax), and [a211641] (trombone). McKay left in 1969 to join [a=Earth, Wind & Fire] and was replaced by [a211642]. Initially, the band was known as [i]The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band[/i], from 1969 on they recorded as [i]Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band[/i]. The group was disbanded when Dunlap, Gadson, Jackson and Blackmon went on to work with [a=Bill Withers] in 1972. Charles Wright then embarked on a solo career.
